Vampires suck, Jessica

Write a film review, write a film review… The first question that came to my head was: what film am I going to talk about? And then I had this revelation, why not talking about the parody of the film that every teenager has seen or that every teenage boy has been forced to see by their girlfriends?

Yes, you’ve guessed that I am talking about the Twilight saga. I won’t try to hide it; I have seen all of them. However, I am lucid enough to see that the success of those films is mostly based on the high-rated hormonal level of the world 's youth. As a consequence, I thought that the new parody from Aaron Seltzer and Jason Friedberg (also directors of Meet the Spartans) was a good idea. Showing the fanatical infatuation of young American girls, empathizing the plainness of the characters seemed to be the recipe for another success.

The Butterfly Effect, Smaïn

The film I’ve chosen is The Butterfly Effect, an American fantastic drama directed by Eric Bress written by J.Mackye Gruber and released in 2004. Let‘s talk about this film.

First of all, let’s give an explanation about the title. The butterfly effect is a theory developed by Edward Lorenz, saying briefly (It’s indeed more complicated…) that a little event, action or move can make a huge one appear later in the time. The example the most used is about a butterfly flap:  Does the Flap of a Butterfly's Wings in Brazil Set off a Tornado in Texas? “ (Edward Lorenz). This title has been well chosen since it’s the main subject of the movie. Therefore, the viewers already have an idea about what kind of film they will watch: this asset is not always present in other films.

The story is about a boy, Evan Treborn, who has memory troubles: a kind of amnesia. Indeed, he forgets minutes/hours of some days and becomes aware of that just later. In other words, his mind goes blank at some moments of his life. During this movie, we will see this character evolving first of all as a young boy then as a teenager and finally as a young adult, an important period of his life because of the fact that he will discover his real ability. He can, by reading some lines from his diary, come back at the day when he wrote it and then change his past. He will use it for saving his girlfriend and childhood friend Kayleigh Miller. Of course, changing the past will also change the future like his relationship with her, his health, his friends and so on; no only about him but also about his friend’s view about him.

Tears of the sun, Marion

I want to write about a brilliant film which is Tears of the Sun, its director is Antoine Fuqua. The story of this movie is heartrending and pacey because in spite of the fact that the story is fictional, the situation of Africa which is represented is factual. Indeed, it's the story of an expedition in Nigeria in the purpose of saving Doctor Lena Kendricks (interpreted by Monica Belluci) by American soldiers whose the first lieutenant is lieutenant Waters (Bruce Willis) whereas the political situation is in danger. But even though the American soldiers must save only the Americans in Nigeria, they choose to save the Nigerians who are with the Doctor. Throughout the film we can see the atrocities which are committed by the rebels and inspired by factual facts. Moreover, the music is very important in the film because it intensifies  emotion, it's a very efficient music because it's Hans Zimmer who composed it. Finally, the special effects are efficient so the scenes seem to be real.

Mary Poppins, Sandra

Mary Poppins which is forty-seven years old can still fascinate children. This is the story of a rich Londonian family which is looking for a nurse to take care of the two youngsters. They must find a serious one who can educate them properly. By magic, someone seems to hear this message. An unspeakable nurse comes then. A new life begins for the two children who travel to weirder and weirder places. Watch the movie and follow them everywhere, it is worth it, actually.

Little Miss Sunshine, Katia

The story takes place on the road from Albuquerque to the Little Miss Sunshine pageant in Redondo Beach, California. The Hoover family treks up to California in order to fulfill the dream of Olive, their daughter, who wants to become Little Miss Sunshine. This competition is the guiding idea of the film, it is not its main action as we could imagine… Indeed, what is funny is that Olive's parents don't take only their daughter in the van. There are persons who would rather be elsewhere but fate brought them together... There is the son, Dwayne, seventeen years old, who has refused to speak for eight months, the grandfather, old rebel, always speaking about sex, drug and alcohol… The gay uncle, specialist of Proust, coming from the hospital because he tried to kill himself so who must be looked after by his sister... who is the mother, upset by her financial situation but who tries to be available for everybody and finally the father who loves winners and hates losers but who seems to belong to this latter category... Characters who seem to have nothing in common but who will learn to support one another in the trials of life.

Love Actually, Inés

The plot occurs some weeks before Christmas, mainly in London, where ten stories intertwine, with for instance the new Prime Minister (the fantastic Hugues Grant) falling in love for his assistant Nathalie ; Mark (Andrew Lincoln) who tries to hide his love for his best friend's wife Juliet (Keira Knightley) ; Jamie (Colin Firth, that we find in Bridget Jones' Diary as the incomparable Marc Darcy and its sweater), a writer recently divorced who goes to his house in the country and meets there Aurelia, the domestic employee who only speaks Portuguese ; or Sam, who is passionately in love with a classmate.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Marine

The poster of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory aims at appealing to people's attention. It is a bit overloaded : there are lots of colours, and candies in the background. Moreover I find that it gives too much information by showing all the characters : I think the two main characters would have been enough.

Yet, we can see straight away that it is not going to be dull : a fictional and gripping mood is anchored by the fact that we could believe that we are inside the factory, thanks to the machines surrounding the poster. I already feel the kind of magic that there is in the film, just by looking at the poster : the cold shapes, the candies bigger than the characters below, and also thanks to the few details such as the big hat and Willy Wonka's suit.

The quotations are funny because they play on the sense of the words, they give a double sense. They drive us directly to the plot : the visit of the chocolate factory.

Everything emphasizes a comical and original atmosphere, exactly as the movie is :

The synopsis is very brilliant. This is like fulfilling a childhood dream. This is a story about a little boy, Charlie, living in a poor house with his family. He wins a golden ticket which allows him to visit Willy Wonka‘s chocolate factory. He’s one the only five children in the world to find a golden ticket. Inside the factory, this is a world made of candies, colours and chocolate : it really makes you want to eat some ! Every child is subjected at temptation and then, when they yield, odd things happen to them. Charlie is the last one who’s stayed reasonable and then, a sweet suprise is waiting for him… A sincere message of hope and imaginary is conveyed in the film. Watching Charlie and the chocolate factory is like transforming the world into candies for an hour and fifty minutes !

BLOOD DIAMOND, Koliane

The scenario presents the pursuit of a son by his father, with the help of  a smuggler of diamonds and a journalist. Blood diamond draws a parallel between a ravaged country and a terrible civil war, the perilous adventures of a hero, a modest farmer in the pure heart and an antihero, an amoral trafficker in search of redemption. This unlikely duo is motivated by opposing obsessions. One is guided by the love for his family  and the other by greed.

Diamond against weapons, fueling civil wars increasingly violent and destructive; heads of bloody wars, terrorizing with lashes of machetes and rockets launchers and submachine guns, enrolling by force any youth, who must choose between being shot dead between the eyes if they refuse or become itself "miniature soldier" manipulated and  indoctrinated; completely destitute populations. The film shows us the appetite, always bigger, for Western countries to want to appropriate in all ways possible, even the most scandalous and most inhumane, natural resources which do not belong to them. The hardness of the conflict, the horror that child soldiers live through, or even more the difficult job of journalist, mixes very strong scenes, very involved massacre scenes but also attacks. Moreover, the action scenes are really well-filmed. As regards the production, the director shows us wonderful African landscape plans. The beauty of Africa is here served on a tray and it is what makes a great visual testimony! With more moving music than the film!

Alice in Wonderland, Charlène

Alice in Wonderland is a production of Walt Disney Pictures and was directed by Tim Burton. It is a fantasy 3D movie inspired from Lewis Carroll's novels « Alice's Adventures in Wonderland » (1865) and « Through the Looking-Glass »  (1871).

It stages Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, Mia WASIKOWSKA as the pretty Alice but Anne HATHAWAY, Helena BONHAM CARTER and Crispin GLOVER are also present.

Synopsis : Alice is now nineteen-year-old and goes back to the fantastic world she discovered when she was still a small girl. She is going to meet the Mad Hatter, the White Rabbit, Tweedledee and Tweedledum, the Cheshire Cat and some other friends again. But this time, her adventure consists in finding her true destiny and of course in putting an end to the Red Queen's reign of terror.

The poster of the film is divided into three pictures. It is quite original since when we gather the three, we have a complete scene with each character of the movie.

There is no catchphrase, only a little information about the film such as the title, the date of its publication, names of actors, producer and director. Most of this information is on the picture in the middle.

When we look at this poster, we are tumbled into the atmosphere of the movie.

The mood is agonising because of the colours which are dark, but also fantastic since there is a mix between reality (the four main characters) and  fiction (the scenery)

It appeals to viewers thanks to the strange atmosphere and to the fact that this movie is the continuation of the cartoon « Alice in Wonderland ».

Moreover, the fact that there is not plenty of information leaves a kind of mystery and thanks to this, people wants to know more about it.

Gladiator, Virgil

Today, we are going to talk about one of Ridley Scott’s movies: Gladiator. This is a historical movie about the Roman Empire, an epic.  Long story short, it is about a Roman general, Maximus Decimus Meridius, and his journey as a gladiator in the Roman arenas in order to take his revenge on Emperor Marc Aurelus’ s son, Commodus, who killed his own father and ordered the murder of Maximus’ family because of the Emperor’s love toward him.
